HAAG Certified Inspector: What It Means and Why It Matters for Your Roof

When you're looking at roof damage after a storm, the documentation you have shapes the conversation you can have with your carrier. HAAG Engineering certification is the methodology insurance adjusters are trained on, so a HAAG-trained inspection report uses the same framework an adjuster will recognize. Hive is not your adjuster, and we never promise an outcome on your behalf — but the better and more aligned the documentation, the better-equipped you are to have a real conversation with your carrier.

What is HAAG Certification?

HAAG Engineering is an independent forensic engineering and consulting firm that has been the industry standard in roofing damage assessment since 1924. Their certification program trains inspectors to:

  • Identify hail, wind, and storm damage using consistent criteria
  • Distinguish between storm damage and normal wear
  • Document findings using industry-standard methodology
  • Produce objective, defensible reports

Many insurance carriers train their own adjusters on the same HAAG methodology. That shared framework is what makes a HAAG-trained inspection report a useful document for a homeowner to have in hand.

Why HAAG Methodology Holds Up

HAAG's methodology is built on decades of forensic research and real-world testing. Inspectors learn to identify damage patterns that are consistent with storm impact versus patterns consistent with aging or maintenance issues.

When a HAAG-trained inspector documents damage, the report uses the same standards adjusters are trained to recognize. That consistency makes the conversation cleaner — but it does not guarantee a claim outcome. Carriers make coverage decisions; they may agree, disagree, or ask for more information.

What a HAAG-Trained Inspection Gives You

Thorough Documentation

HAAG-trained inspectors document damage systematically — photographing each affected area with context and measurements, and tying damage to a specific storm event where possible. The result is a report you own and can share with your carrier.

A Report That Holds Up in Appeals

If your carrier denies a claim and you choose to appeal or request appraisal, a HAAG-methodology report is the kind of documentation that holds up under scrutiny. Whether you appeal, request appraisal, file a TDI complaint, or hire a licensed Texas public adjuster is your decision.

Catching Hidden Damage

Texas hailstorms often cause damage that isn't visible from the ground. HAAG training teaches inspectors to look for subtle signs — bruising, granule loss patterns, seal breaks — that less-trained eyes can miss.

HAAG Inspection Process

A HAAG-methodology inspection typically includes:

  • Ground assessment: Collateral damage to gutters, siding, vents, and outdoor equipment
  • Roof inspection: Systematic examination of all surfaces, penetrations, and flashings
  • Test squares: Counting damage in representative areas to establish damage density
  • Photo documentation: Detailed images with references for scale and location
  • Written report: Professional documentation you can share with your carrier

Beware of Storm Chasers

After major storms, Texas sees an influx of out-of-state contractors going door-to-door promising free inspections. Some lack proper licensing, insurance, or HAAG training. Any contractor who promises a specific claim outcome, offers to waive your deductible (which is illegal under Texas Insurance Code §27.02), or asks to pick up your insurance check is operating outside the rules — ask questions before handing anything over.

Always verify credentials before allowing anyone on your roof. A legitimate contractor will provide proof of licensing, insurance, and certifications.

Our HAAG-Trained Team

At Hive Roofing, our inspectors maintain HAAG training and produce reports built on that methodology. We provide a thorough inspection and a written report. We do not file claims, negotiate with carriers, file supplements, settle, or collect insurance funds on your behalf — Hive is a roofing contractor, not a public adjuster.

The report belongs to you. What you do with it — including whether to talk to your carrier about a claim — is your call. Schedule a free HAAG-trained inspection when you're ready.
